Is this vintage SM58 legit? Need a reality check on my old workhorse (Late 90s/Early 00s)

Hey everyone,

I dug up my old SM58 today. I’ve had this workhorse since the late 90s or early 2000s and always assumed it was 100% authentic. But looking at it closely today, I started having some doubts because it looks quite different from modern SM58s.

Here are the reasons why I'm questioning it:

  • The XLR connector logo is different: It doesn't have the standard text logo found on newer models. (And of course, there are no inspection stickers anywhere inside.)
  • The capsule structure looks different: Crucially, the shape of the capsule head under the grille doesn't match the modern ones.
  • Internal components: There is a piece of yellow foam stuffed inside the handle, and the wires connecting the transformer to the capsule look remarkably thin and somewhat fragile to my eye.

That said, it sounds exactly like a textbook SM58 should.

Can anyone help me identify if this is a genuine vintage unit from that era or just a clever old fake? Any insights would be greatly appreciated!
