Laid off on H-1B after 10 years in SWE. B-2, F-1, or PhD route?

Hi everyone,

I recently got laid off while on H-1B. I have around 10 years of strong Software Engineering experience.

For context, I previously did an H-1B to B-2 to H-1B transition about a year ago, so I am trying to understand my options carefully this time.

I would really appreciate advice or personal experiences from anyone who has been in a similar situation.

My main questions are the following:

  1. H-1B → B-2 → H-1B again Is it realistic to do the same route again if I need more time to find a new employer?
  2. H-1B → F-1 → H-1B Am I eligible to switch from H-1B to F-1? Also, is it still realistic to get admission for Fall 2026 at this point?
  3. PhD route Is pursuing a PhD a practical option in this situation? I do not know much about this route, so I would really appreciate hearing from people who have actually done this or considered it seriously.

I understand this is not legal advice and I will consult an immigration attorney, but I would like to hear real experiences, timelines, risks, and practical suggestions from people who have gone through this.

Thank you.
