The actual biology of razor bumps — why switching to a DE razor fixes what no cream can
Been in this hobby long enough to understand why single
blade changes everything for men with coarse or curly hair.
Multi-blade cartridges use a lift-and-cut mechanism. The
first blade lifts the hair above the skin surface. The
remaining blades cut it below the skin line. The cut hair
retracts beneath the surface immediately. For men with
straight hair this resolves without issue. For coarse or
curly hair, the asymmetric cortex distribution causes the
hair to curl back into the dermis as it regrows — that is
the entire mechanical cause of PFB. Not hygiene. Not
products. Just geometry.
The fix is purely mechanical too:
— Single blade DE cuts at the surface, not below it
— Shave with the grain only on the first pass
— Salicylic acid 2% immediately post-shave dissolves the
dead cell accumulation blocking follicles
— Every other day minimum to let hairs grow above the
surface before cutting again
For dark spots from healed bumps: niacinamide 5% morning
and night, alpha arbutin 2% in the morning. Realistic
timeline is 3-6 months for full PIH resolution.
Happy to go deeper on any part of this — blade gap
selection by beard type, pre-shave protocol for severe
PFB, or the hyperpigmentation treatment stack.
