Dubai accident at Hessa Street / E311 interchange – vehicle caused me to brake suddenly and fled. What can I do?
I recently had an accident at the Hessa Street / E311 interchange while travelling from JVC towards the Sharjah exit with my family.
There was a black SUV, possibly a Toyota Land Cruiser or Nissan Patrol, in front of me. The vehicle initially took an exit other than the Sharjah exit. The driver apparently realized that he had taken the wrong exit and then suddenly reversed/changed direction and entered the Sharjah exit without properly checking the road.
I was already travelling on the Sharjah exit at around 60–80 km/h. I had to brake suddenly to avoid hitting the vehicle. Fortunately, I managed to avoid hitting it, but the vehicle behind me hit the rear of my car very hard.
The impact was serious, and the vehicle behind me eventually had to be taken away by a recovery vehicle.
The most frustrating part is that the first vehicle — whose sudden manoeuvre caused me to brake — did not stop. When the driver apparently realized that there had been an accident behind him, he accelerated away and disappeared within seconds.
I understand that the vehicle behind me physically hit my car, but the dangerous manoeuvre by the vehicle in front was what triggered the sudden braking and subsequent collision.
Unfortunately, I did not have a dashcam installed in my vehicle, so I don't have video footage of the incident.
However, I can provide the approximate time, exact location, direction of travel and description of the vehicle. Since this happened at a major E311 interchange, I am wondering whether Dubai Police may be able to check available CCTV/traffic-camera footage.
I'd appreciate advice from anyone familiar with Dubai Police/UAE traffic procedures:
- Can I report the first vehicle for the dangerous manoeuvre and leaving the scene?
- Can Dubai Police investigate available CCTV footage at the interchange?
- Is it possible to identify the vehicle from CCTV if I don't know the registration number?
- Should I contact Dubai Police 901 and make a separate complaint?
- If CCTV confirms the manoeuvre, can the first driver be fined or held responsible?
- Has anyone dealt with a similar situation in Dubai?
I want to report this properly and factually. I am not claiming that the first vehicle physically hit me — it didn't. My concern is that its sudden and unsafe manoeuvre caused me to brake and led to the collision behind me, after which the driver left the scene.
Any advice from people who have dealt with a similar situation would be greatly appreciated.
