How much does being a reapplicant actually hurt your chances of matching?

For context, I’m a non-US IMG trying to plan things realistically. I’ve heard people say reapplying is a major red flag, while others say it depends more on what you improve between cycles.

If someone goes unmatched once and then spends the year strengthening their application (more USCE, research, Step 3, networking, etc.), do programs still screen them out heavily just for being a reapplicant?

Would appreciate honest advice from people who matched after reapplying, especially IMGs.

Hi everyone,

I’m a final-year MBBS student from Pakistan preparing to apply for the US Match in the near future, and I’d really appreciate some guidance from those who have successfully matched (especially fellow IMGs).

I had a few questions:

- How much does being an IMG realistically impact your chances of matching compared to US graduates?

- Which specialties are generally more IMG-friendly, and which ones are significantly harder to break into?

- What factors do you think made the biggest difference in your application (USMLE scores, USCE, research, connections, etc.)?

- Are there any common mistakes you see IMGs make during the application process?

- If you could go back, what would you do differently as an IMG applicant?

Any honest advice, personal experiences, or insights would mean a lot. Thanks in advance!
