Does not have to be the main gimmick of the game, can be related to a character choice but preferably has a tangible effect on combat and/or exploration.

Preferably (but not limited to) rpg, open world, not turn based, somewhat modern? The old mmo(rpg)s and extremely dated games with clunky controls don't sit well with me.

Games ive enjoyed with such a mechanic are played WoW, Diablo, PoE, Dark and Darker, LOTRO to name a few

Preferably animal shapeshifting but I'm not completely limited to it.

I also enjoy build-and-dump mechanics much like Devil May Cry games with their devil trigger forms. Not quite shapeshifting but I'm open to games with that sort of aspect as well.
