What is this cadence? Sheet music?

Hello, I’m a first year music teacher. Part of my contract is marching band. Coming into my position I learned that my drumline has not had sheet music in years. They learn their cadences by ear from old videos.

I don’t mind the tradition of passing things down, but I don’t like that there is no sheet music to be found. I don’t know how to help them improve and help them fix anything if they are playing it wrong. I have been able to transcribe two of their cadences.

This one I am having trouble with especially with the technique in the tenor drum entrance. On the drum they are almost doing a double stroke but dragging in from center of drum head to the bottom edge of the drumhead. (I have a video recording of their cadence.)

I know a good bunch about percussion and technique but I don’t know if this is something they are doing wrong or if it is an actual notation/technique.

If there is anyone who has heard this cadence/has another recording/sheet music could I get some help/advice?

Advice?

Hello reddit music educators.

So today was day 2 of my first year teaching job. I’m teaching 5-12 music. In my workload I have a 6-8 choir and a 6-8 band. These first two days we did not sing or play (could be part of it) but the kids are so loud, disrespectful, and will not stop talking. I’m ashamed but I get I had to yell at them to get their attention. I would get them quiet for a few seconds then it would ramp back up.

I made a seating chart for my choir separating boys/girls. I’m currently working on my band seating chart.

I don’t want to be the teacher whose anger drives them away (their previous one as well).

Also in my state 6-7th graders are required to do fine arts so they have to do band or choir at my school. I have 48 in my band and 60+ in my choir.

Also after doing some pre tests to see what they know about music theory. Most of them don’t even know note names and how to count (or what a measure or bar line is).

If I could get some advice on moving forward I’d greatly appreciate it.

Budget Dilemma

Hello music educators! This year I am a first year teacher in a 5-12 band and choir position. Very excited and nervous. I will be having a high school band, middle school band, high school choir, middle school choir, and a general music class.

When it comes to my 6-8 band, do you have any advice on finding or adapting repertoire while also on a tight budget? I have been told by my superintendent that since 2021 about $350 has been used on music and materials per year. (I don’t think this includes marching band competition/large group contest registration.

I understand I am in a smaller school district but this makes me super nervous with how little of a budget I have.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

First Year Teacher

Hello I’m a first year teacher! I will be teaching 5-12 band and choir (with a 6th grade general music class). I start professional development over the next couple weeks. Any advice starting out the year? We don’t have a concert till the end of the semester and I don’t want to start looking at that rep right away. I’ll have a HS band, MS band, HS choir, and a MS choir!
