I’m trying to build a simple phone system for my business and I’m looking for advice on the best VoIP / SaaS solution.

Here’s my use case:

• I have a Canadian business number (Quebec-based)
• I want a freelancer located internationally to be able to:
  • make and receive calls using that number
  • send and receive SMS (optional but preferred)
• I need API access (important for my n8n setup)
• Ideally pay-as-you-go or usage-based pricing (no heavy monthly subscription)
• Either:
  • a SaaS built on top of Twilio, or
  • a direct CPaaS like Twilio / Telnyx / Plivo / etc.
• Must have PC UI, mobile optional
• Bonus: a simple interface for non-technical users (the freelancer), not just a developer console like twilio

What I’ve looked at so far:

• Twilio (great API but not very user-friendly for agents)
• Aircall (too expensive, subscription-based)
• some “Twilio softphone apps” but they seem limited or unclear on API support

What I’m really trying to figure out:

• Is there a good middle layer SaaS that gives:
  • Twilio-level API flexibility
  • but also a simple call/SMS interface for freelancers/agents
  • without locking me into monthly per-user subscriptions

If anyone has built something similar or has recommendations (even developer tools / open-source stacks), I’d really appreciate it.
