Company visiting our college is hiring only male candidates for an FPGA/VHDL internship. Is this common?

Not naming the company since this is an ongoing placement process, but anyone who has been checking the placement portal probably knows which one I'm referring to.

There's an internship opening for M.Tech. VLSI students, but it's restricted to male candidates. From what I understand, it's an FPGA/VHDL related role, and I can't think of any obvious reason why gender would matter for that kind of work.

Is this something that's actually common in campus placements? If any seniors or alumni here have come across similar cases, I'd be interested to know whether there's usually a genuine reason behind it or if it's just a company-specific hiring policy.
