It has always bothered me that PCs gain levels and abilities without training or study while engaged in adventuring. Sure, you get some training on the road, but how do you master a new tier of magic or gain a physical ability so quickly when the champion NPCs you encounter grow at a slower rate?

Has anyone tried enforcing time skips at level up (in 5/5.5e)? I don't mean like a long rest or two, but skipping months or years at a time? I am thinking of running a new campaign with this premise.
