▲ 5 r/LECOM+1 crossposts

Hi everyone, I’m a senior trying to make a final decision and I’m stuck between two BS/DO pathways. I’m fully committed to becoming a physician and would really value honest input.

Option 1: LECOM EAP with FIU (3+4 track)

Program Details:

  • Guaranteed DO pathway (LECOM EAP)
  • No MCAT required
  • Requirements: 3.4 cumulative GPA, 3.3 science GPA
  • Binding program (cannot apply out without losing seat)
  • If I take the MCAT and score below 500, I lose my seat

Pros:

  • No MCAT stress
  • Secure, guaranteed DO seat
  • FIU undergrad is essentially free for me + ~$2–3k/semester refund from FAFSA/scholarships
  • Lower GPA requirement compared to most programs

Cons:

  • Locked in early (no applying MD without losing spot)
  • Must move out for medical school
  • ~50 min commute for undergrad
  • Less flexibility overall

Option 2: NSU KPCOM BS/DO (2+4 or 4+4 track)

Program Details:

  • DO pathway at NSU KPCOM
  • Requirements: 3.5 cumulative + science GPA, 500 MCAT
  • ~1000 shadowing hours expected
  • Non-binding (can apply MD)

Pros:

  • Flexibility to apply MD
  • Can stay home for both undergrad and med school
  • More traditional path with options open
  • No forced commitment early

Cons:

  • MCAT required
  • Higher GPA requirement
  • No financial aid advantage (I’ll be paying)
  • No guaranteed seat in the same way as LECOM EAP

My dilemma:

  • FIU/LECOM = safest path (guaranteed seat, no MCAT, strong financial upside), but I’m locked in and give up MD chances
  • NSU = more risk (MCAT + higher GPA), but keeps MD open and lets me stay home

I’m a first-gen student, so the idea of turning down a guaranteed med school seat feels risky but I also don’t want to close doors too early if I could aim hiher.

Questions:

  • How difficult is maintaining a 3.5 GPA + 500+ MCAT in reality?
  • Is giving up MD flexibility worth the security of LECOM EAP?
  • How valuable is having a guaranteed seat this early?
  • What would you choose in this situation and why?

Thanks in advance for any honest advice I really appreciate it 🙏🙏🙏
