Vacant home security!
Hi! We are first home buyers that recently bought an as-is home that had been left vacant since January. The house is filled with the previous owners' belongings (clothes, books, furniture etc) as they are elderly and unable to deal with the clean up, so we have been going in on the weekends to clear it out in preparation for reno.
We have been doing this for about 4 weekends now, but today we discovered someone has been in house! The cupboards and wardrobes all show signs of being rifled through. Nothing is damaged and none of the belongings in there are ours to begin with so we can't tell if anything has really been stolen.
We are both very unsettled and unsure of next steps. We have previously moved furniture and stuff to block the doors from the inside, leaving only one door for us to go in and out from. It didn't seem like the door was damaged when we arrived today so we are not sure how someone got in. The property currently have a very low wooden fence that anyone can step over. The house is very old and we were thinking to change the doors and some of the windows as part of the renovation, so not sure if it's worth getting a lock smith in to change locks. We did a quick search for security options but we are probably a bit too panicky to think of a rational solution. What should we do!?
