Anyone else noticed the trend? Opinions?

I am a bit annoyed with how often authors do this, and not tag ooc, because their kill off the sass that defined the character. What do you think?

Edit: I see I have not explained myself clearly, Some writers eliminate other possible ways of communication too- ASL, writing, hand gestures, body language and facial expressions. There are those that are written well and are an interesting read as character exploration and have a character face adversity, but otherwise they become a Macguffin, the example for me is bumble bee in the live action transformers movies compared to animated shows. His communication is limited to specific scenes and is often cut short.
