Small all black town in OK.

Small all black town in OK.

Hi all. First post and very nervous. Teenage daughter with “witchy vibes” likes going to cemeteries to look around. I grew up about 49 miles from Tatums in an all white town, so I never knew much of Tatums growing up. So, I thought we should check it out and I’m glad I did, anywhoosies, I hope yall like the photo, my daughter liked it and thought yall might like it too.

Photo was taken in Tatums,OK. One of 15 or so all black towns left in Oklahoma. It was a very beautiful cemetery. I took a few other photos but this one was in its own gated area of the same family. The smaller headstones had the children and their spouses buried there. Another headstone has two brothers buried together. One a WWI vet and the other a civil war vet.A lot of the same bloodlines buried here. You can tell family is important in this city.

The town has a rich history. The co-founders(Lee Tatum and Mary Tatum) who founded the town in what was then Indian Territory in 1895 is buried near the front of the cemetery, ran a cotton gin and the post office, apparently Mr Tatum even dipped his toes in being an actor in silent films.

My daughter and I spent a lot of time there just in awe of how beautiful the cemetery is. It’s well cared for and people still have loved ones around them visiting their graves often. It’s a very lovely cemetery. The town still hosts Black History Month celebrations.

If you like checking out cemeteries and you’re in the Oklahoma/ Northern Texas area and need a few hours to kill, I’d highly suggest the drive. The scenery is beautiful, but make sure you have some music pre downloaded because you’ll like lose phone service.

Hope yall enjoyed my rambling! Take care!
