Victim of a Hit and Run, how soon should I get a Lawyer?

Location: North east, Ohio. I know the optimal answer is as soon as possible but this incident happened 8 days ago to a family member of mine. As of today the police told me they may have found a car involved but nothing more than that. I’m in charge of everything since most of my family is far away or not involved in family matters at all. As soon as this incident happened my own issues blow up (family, health, work, etc) I’m overwhelmed with everything right now and really don’t have a minute of free time. I also don’t want to screw up anything for my family member as they will need all the money they can get from this incident since the injury resulted in their spinal cord being severed and permanent paralysis. I’m sorry if my post looks like a rant or rambling, it’s just a lot at this time for me. Any advice would help.

The incident: They were riding their bike home at night from a friend’s house and a car hit them and ran. The injury resulted in permanent paralysis of the lower spine and legs. From the police report their body was found on a roadway after someone driving saw their body lying on the ground.

Personal Injury Advice

A friend of mine was recently sustained some life changing injuries because of a hit and run. She was at a friends house, they had some drinks, and she got on her bike to ride home (5-10 min ride). A car hit her and ran. Will this seriously complicate getting a decent PI attorney? I heard a lot of them only take on cases that are guaranteed pay outs from the get go. Also she’s a second year MD resident, will she get kicked out of the program for this? Will it affect any future job prospects (injury aside)? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Not sure why I’m getting an AI warning for this post, maybe my grammar is terrible idk.
