Profile review request — BSc Honors Statistics (UAlberta, 3.65) applying to Canadian/US MS or PhD in Statistics/ML, energy domain focus

Background
• UAlberta BSc Honors Statistics, Minor in Computing Science, expected Apr 2027
• GPA: 3.65/4.0, Dean’s Honors List
• Canadian university, international student (Chinese)
• Target: MS or PhD in Statistics, Data Science, or ML — prefer staying in Canada (UofT, UBC, McGill, Waterloo), open to strong US programs

Research
• Undergraduate researcher in ECE dept since Sep 2025: structured carbon-intensity forecasting via fuel-mix neural surrogates, multi-region pipeline (ISO-NE, NYISO, PJM, ERCOT), paper in preparation for IEEE venue
• Independent projects: TFT-based decision-focused carbon forecaster, LSTM emissions forecaster
• TA for introductory statistics (200+ students)
• RA for data engineering (web scraping, climate litigation database)

Relevant coursework
ML I (A+), Prob & Stats I (A+), Algorithms (B+), Linear Algebra I/II (A+/A), Real Analysis (in progress), Mathematical Statistics (in progress)

Concerns
• Paper still in preparation, not yet submitted — will it hurt if it’s not published by application time?
• Supervisor is ECE, not Statistics — does cross-department research matter?
• No industry internship

Questions
1. Realistic target schools given this profile?
2. PhD or MS first?
3. Any specific faculty working in energy/sustainability + ML/statistics worth reaching out to?
