When I was young, our neighbour who was very fussy about record keeping and having everything 'just so' bought a small, fuel efficient car. He was going on about how little fuel it burnt. Every few nights, my father would slip into the neighbour's driveway and top up his tank. After a number of weeks, the guy was raving about how incredibly miserly his new car was on fuel. Then Dad stopped doing it. I think the neighbour went to the dealer to complain about the drop-off in mileage.
