AutoRank - a UK vehicle stats site using MOT data

Hi all,

I’ve been working on a side project called AutoRank and would really appreciate some honest feedback.

It’s a UK-focused vehicle stats site that uses real-world MOT data to make it easier to compare cars by things like MOT pass rates, common faults, reliability trends and market share by make and model.

The idea started back in 2022 when I was looking for a simple way to compare used cars using actual data rather than just reviews, forum posts or owner opinions. I couldn’t really find what I wanted, so I decided to try building it myself.

It ended up being a much bigger project than I expected. There’s been a lot of work around importing and processing billions of rows of MOT data, rebuilding the database, speeding up slow queries, changing the UI, breaking things, fixing them, then breaking them again. Some queries that originally took hours now run in seconds. Over the last year, tools like Codex have also helped speed up parts of the development process.

The site is still very much in beta, and I’m still refining the data, metrics and layout, but it’s now at the stage where I’d like to get some proper feedback from people outside my own bubble.

Would you find something like this useful when buying or researching a used car?

Does anything feel confusing, missing, inaccurate or not particularly useful?

Any feedback, good or bad, would be genuinely appreciated.

Thanks!

I built a UK car stats site and i'm looking for some feedback - AutoRank

Hi all,

I’ve already shared this over on r/CarTalkUK, but thought it might also be relevant here as well with it being such a big UK sub.

I’ve been working on a project called AutoRank, which looks at real-world UK vehicle data and tries to make it easier to understand things like MOT pass rates, common faults, reliability trends and market share by make and model.

The idea started back in 2022 when I was looking for a simple way to compare cars using real-world stats rather than just reviews or owner opinions. I couldn’t really find what I wanted, so I ended up trying to build it myself.

It turned into a much bigger job than I expected: importing and processing billions of rows of MOT data, rebuilding parts of the database, optimising slow queries, testing different layouts, and generally breaking things many times before getting them working. Some queries that used to take hours now run in seconds, and tools like Codex have helped speed up development a lot over the last year.

The site is still in beta, and the data/metrics are still being refined, but it’s finally at the stage where I’d like to get some real feedback before progressing with it.

I’d really appreciate any thoughts on whether this would be useful when buying or researching a used car, and whether anything feels confusing, missing, inaccurate, or just not very useful.

Thanks!

Sharing my UK car stats project AutoRank in the hope some of you find it useful / Interesting

Hi all,

I wanted to share a project I’ve been working on called AutoRank.co.uk.

It started back in 2022 when I went looking for a simple way to view real-world UK car stats, things like MOT pass rates, common faults, reliability and market trends, but couldn’t really find what I wanted, so I decided to try building it myself.

It turned out to be a much bigger job than expected, involving billions of rows of data, broken scripts, database changes, query optimisation, UI testing and a lot of trial and error. Some queries that used to take tens of hours now run in seconds, and tools like Codex have helped speed up development a lot over the last year.

The site is still in beta and the data is still being refined, but it’s finally at a point where I can share it.

Any feedback would be genuinely appreciated, whether it’s bugs, weird results, confusing bits or feature ideas.
