Hi, I was walking in downtown Osaka (outside Umeda station at the pedestrian road next to Takashimaya), when I was approached by a young Japanese guy in Japanese (who i think was with his friends, although he approached me alone). It was late morning on a saturday and it was quite busy. I'm a Japanese-passing asian foreigner and i'm a guy.(during my trip i was spoken to in Japanese most of the time, i speak very rudimentary Japanese and I think lots of people were surprised I wasn't Japanese). Because his Japanese was too advanced for me and I was on my way to somewhere I was a bit flustered and replied in English. After I told him i didn't understand he stopped talking and I walked off as I was in a rush. That whole day I was wondering why he approached me, unfortunately my Japanese was too bad for me understand what he said.

I thought Japanese people tend not to approach strangers? Was I being hit on? Or was I being asked to join a cult? Marketing? There weren't any flyers or stalls set up. Do any Japanese or Japanese passing foreigners have experiences with this, or does anyone have any cultural insights?
