Seeking a hardware synth with a robust Envelope Follower for guitar-driven dynamics (No modular, no huge workstations)

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for recommendations for a hardware synthesizer that can achieve a specific type of organic interaction between a guitar and a synth engine.

My current workflow in Ableton Live: I use the Max for Live "Envelope Follower" device. I route my guitar's audio signal into it and map the output to the synth’s volume (or filter). By doing this, the synth acquires the natural, organic dynamics of the guitar that a standard ADSR envelope can't replicate. It’s also great for creating unique dynamics by placing effects like delay/reverb before the follower. When I apply the same envelope to both the guitar and synth tracks, they blend perfectly.

What I want to achieve in hardware: I want to bring this "Envelope Follower-based modulation" into a standalone hardware setup.

My planned signal chain:

  • MIDI: I'll use a BOSS GM-800 (or MIDI Guitar 3) to send MIDI Note data to the synth.
  • Audio: Simultaneously, I’ll route the dry/processed guitar signal into the synth’s External Input to use as a modulation source (Envelope Follower).

Constraints:

  • No Modular/Eurorack: I know this is easy with modular, but I prefer a single, cohesive hardware unit.
  • Portability: I looked into the Korg MONTAGE/MODX, but they are too large for my live setup.
  • MicroFreak: I’ve tried using the Vocoder mode (which uses followers internally), but it didn't give me the results I was looking for.

The Dream Synth would have:

  1. An External Audio Input.
  2. A built-in Envelope Follower.
  3. A flexible Modulation Matrix to map that follower to various parameters (VCA, VCF, etc.).

Are there any compact or desktop synths that excel at this?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

**I'm Japanese and not very good at English, so I wrote this in Japanese first and then translated it into English using Gemini.
