I'm looking to import a high emission vehicle from Japan into Malta.

I'm aware that I'll need to pay import + vat + registration fees.

I've calculated everything and I think I have a good estimate of the final price, but I've heard people complain that they got "surprised" by the registration tax for a car they imported into malta.

Can they just decide to come up with a number that makes no sense?

I've gotten my estimate through the official TM website (Malta - Used Motor Vehicle Valuation)

I'd love to hear about anyone's experience of importing a car into Malta.
