Increased water/sewer usage with known main sewer line damage
Back in February, a plumber discovered a break in the main sewer line approximately 80 feet from the access point that was due to tree roots. My landlord didn't fully explain what repairs were done, but to my understanding, they mostly removed roots without fully correcting the break in the line. All work was done in about 4 hours.
This month, my sewer bill has gone up dramatically due to increased water usage, about 4k gallons more than same billing period last year. When I asked my landlord if the sewer line could be a cause, he said no because "the meter stopped spinning when we turned off the main water supply, then started again when water was turned on." Does this really help determine if sewer line problems are the cause? I don't want to be responsible for this bill if it is due to my landlord failing to completely solve the problem.
Thank you so much for your help! My actual knowledge about plumbing is minimal so I'm sorry if I didn't explain things right but please feel free to ask any questions.
