Question about 2L summer job - transactional work

Hi everyone,

I’m working at a smaller business/corporate law firm for my 2L summer where i’m getting transactional and litigation experience.

Litigation experience is pretty consistent with work I’ve gotten as a student in the past (drafting pleadings, research, etc). I’m more curious about student involvement in transactional work because I’ve never done it before.
My transactional work entails: My supervising lawyer is making edits on the contracts for me to go back and draft / revise them, so I take the time to read and understand it while I’m doing that, and usually fill in the details he’s left for me (usually simple stuff like dates, contact info, etc, etc). I’m not necessarily being asked to insert a provision about X or Y, he just works off multiple precedents and combines and customizes based on the details of the deal & I ultimately draft and combine and revise(I’m mindful that I’m barely starting my 3rd week as I say this and fully do not expect to be asked to draft contracts— just putting this out there for context!).

My question is, as a summer student, are there other ways students should be involved in transactional work? Is there something I should be asking my supervising lawyer to show me? Litigation obviously has more learning moments for students and ways for students to get involved, but I think because I’m so new to understand what exactly transactional work entails, and if there is even a ton of space for students to be involved in that work, I’m curious if there is more I should be asking for other than making revisions. In my view, at this point, it seems like you learn to draft a contract/what to include through experience and repetition and I just need to be around and listening to what my supervising lawyer does and revising as he asks to understand that type of work. Just curious on other people’s thoughts and if transactional work is typically less involved for students.

Thanks in advance!
