Summer in Crete

Hello everyone,

We’re lucky enough to be spending our summer holidays in Crete this year and would love some advice from people who know the island well. We’ll be there for 5 weeks — two adults and two children (ages 6 and 9).

Our plan is to fly into Heraklion and spend the first two weeks slowly travelling around eastern Crete before meeting the rest of our family in Ferma, where we’ll stay in a villa for the remaining three weeks.

At the moment, our rough itinerary looks something like:
Sissi → Mochlos → Palaikastro → Makry Gialos → Ferma

We arrive mid July to late August.

We’re focusing on eastern Crete mainly because of timing and the children — we’d rather avoid long drives in the August heat and keep the trip relaxed and enjoyable for everyone.

Does this sound like a good plan? Are there any places you’d add, skip, or spend more/less time in? We’d also love recommendations for worthwhile stops along the route, family-friendly beaches, tavernas, boat trips, or anything else you think shouldn’t be missed.

Any hints or tips would be hugely appreciated. We would love to learn about any festivals too! We’re incredibly excited to explore Crete and make the most of this special trip. Thanks so much in advance!
