Only got accepted into a Masters - How do I make the most out of it?

Im currently an undergraduate student wanting to do a PhD in Microbiology. I applied this cycle but unfortunately I was rejected everywhere. Thankfully however, I got accepted into an accelerated masters program at my current university, meaning I’d complete my masters in 1 year.

So as the title of the post says, what’s the best I can do to really make the most out of my masters? I’m picking the thesis route and I’ll be working under the same professor as I’ve been during my undergraduate year. Also since it’s an accelerated program, I take less classes (as an undergraduate u take the same classes as a graduate student, the accelerated program means I don’t retake those classes), hopefully meaning my grades will be a lot better.

Are there fellowships, grants, or other things I can apply for during my masters that can enhance my skill set ? I’ll be working on a paper over the summer so hopefully that works out but I really wanted to know from a larger community what I can do to make sure I stand out as an applicant during the next PhD cycle.
