I’m a software developer and I just got laid off.
I don’t usually post things like this, but I’ve hit a really difficult point and could honestly use some advice or support from other South Africans in tech.
I recently got laid off from a remote role with a company in Canada, I have been working for them for 4 years. It happened pretty suddenly, and while I’m trying to stay positive and keep applying, the reality is that the market feels extremely tough right now.
I’m a developer who builds web and mobile apps. My main stack is React, React Native, PHP, SQL, and JavaScript, but I’m confident enough to learn and work with almost anything if given the chance. Most of my experience came from real client work, freelancing, and building production systems, not just tutorials or demo projects.
Over the years I’ve worked on:
- Web platforms
- Mobile apps
- Backend systems/APIs
- CMS platforms
- Firebase integrations
- Payment systems
- UI implementation and deployments
I’ve always tried to be the kind of person who figures things out and gets the work done, but being laid off has honestly shaken me a bit financially and mentally.
If anyone knows of:
- Remote opportunities
- South African companies hiring developers
- Freelance work
- Startup founders needing technical help
- Or even general advice on surviving this stage
…I’d genuinely appreciate it.
