Can I use news articles as citations in a master’s dissertation?
Hi everyone,
I'm currently writing my master's thesis in economics and finance, and in some parts I need to cite news articles as sources for specific events or occurrences.
For example, when explaining movements in bond yields or share prices on a particular day, I sometimes refer to events reported in the news that happened around the same time (they even say that it impacted the financial market, for example). I’m careful with the wording and usually say that the market movement “coincided with” or “followed” the event, rather than directly claiming causality.
In some cases, these events are only easily available through news articles rather than academic sources. Is it acceptable to use news articles as citations in this kind of context, as long as they are not being used as the main theoretical or academic sources?
