OCI Update After Renouncing US Citizenship & Multiple Citizenships Question
Hi everyone,
I’m an NRI originally from India. I moved to the US when I was 7 and completed most of my education there. I became a US citizen through naturalization in 2015.
I currently work in AI financial engineering. I’m the CEO of a company that helps businesses track and manage cash flow using AI systems, and my wife works alongside me as COO.
Over time, my citizenship situation became a bit complicated. My wife is also Indian-origin. Her father was a British Indian who lived in Australia, and her mother is a Canadian Indian. Through marriage and residency, I later obtained Australian citizenship after living and working remotely in Sydney for around 3 years. After that, we moved to the UK, where we’ve now been living for 4 years, and I received British citizenship/passport last year.
Now I’m considering renouncing my US citizenship mainly because of worldwide taxation rules. Recently, I also found out I may be eligible for Canadian citizenship in the future through my wife’s side, although I currently don’t hold Canadian PR or a spousal visa there.
We’re also planning for a baby soon, so I want to organize all citizenship and OCI matters properly before that.
My questions are:
If I renounce my US citizenship, what documents do I need to update/upload for OCI?
Do I need to declare all current and previous citizenships during OCI updates?
I’ve seen mixed information online and on Reddit about whether all citizenships must be declared.
Since I’m traveling to India in around 1.5 months, I want to avoid any issues during immigration or OCI processing.
Also, would holding Australian + British citizenship together create any OCI complications? And if I later become eligible for Canadian citizenship, would that affect OCI in any way?
Would appreciate advice from anyone who has dealt with similar multi-citizenship OCI situations.
Thanks.
