Feeling culturally and professionally isolated in my postdoc
I am a postdoc in the US and currently ending my second year. The majority of my colleagues share a common native language and culture, so casual conversations and informal technical discussions naturally happen in their native language rather than English. Because I do not understand their language, I am completely locked out of spontaneous teamwork and finding it very difficult to collaborate. While I know they speak it just out of convenience, and they are truly nice people, including my PI, it leaves me feeling incredibly isolated. It's just not syncing.
Also, I am no longer enjoying the work environment. My PI just extended my contract for another year, but I feel completely isolated in this place.
Should I stay, put my head down, and just focus on finishing my project? Or should I actively look for a new job, whether in academia or industry, and leave? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
