Why is the film/television industry afraid to write evil women

Recently, the New East of Eden trailer just dropped, and it honestly looks pretty shit. Cathy Ames is genuinely one of the most fascinating and batshit evil characters in fiction, and reducing her to a sympathetic anti-hero (as the description implies) sounds like they just want to make the joker for women.

My friends talk about this a lot; how almost sexist, in a way, that modern stories can't just have flawed, complex, and bad natured gals that are unsympathetically scary. My friends used to joke that Cathy was the girlies' Judge Holden, and now I can only hope we get to see netflix's gender swapped girlboss blood meridian coming soon

The only thing I hope for is maybe the tv adaption gets more young people reading Steinbeck, but we'll see
