Starving for the Make
Out of every spot I hit for this project, this one stood above the rest.
It wasn’t easy to find. I spent the entire day getting booted from almost every setup I tried in this upstate New York college town. Right when I was about to call it, I stumbled onto this hidden gem tucked behind an amphitheater with a construction site that conveniently blocked off the entrance.
No bust. No interruptions. Just a perfect rail waiting to be ridden.
The second I saw it, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. The only problem was, after hours of searching, I had completely forgotten to eat, and this spot still needed a little TLC. A couple packs of gummy fruit snacks had to hold me over because there was no way I was leaving without getting this trick.
Setup was surprisingly easy. I moved a few benches out of the landing, built an in-run down the stairs, and that was it. Probably the easiest setup I’ve ever had.
I started with a few front boards just to feel it out. The only thing really sketching me out was the light post waiting at the end if I popped out early. Luckily, there was barely enough room to stop before smashing into it.
As I kept hitting the rail, the guys working inside the building started catching on. They began knocking on the windows and hyping me up after every try.
I got a front board through it from both the top and bottom angles. By then, I realized over two hours had already passed since I pulled up, and I had already burned through my snacks and was completely starving.
But I told myself I wasn’t leaving without getting the what I wanted.
I reset the tripod and camera at the bottom angle and kept battling. The frustrating part was knowing I could do it — I was just so exhausted and hungry that I didn’t know if I actually would. On top of that, I still had a five-hour drive home for work, and it was April in upstate New York, meaning there was a good chance the snow would be gone by the next day.
I tried to block all of that out and just keep trying.
Somewhere around 20-30 attempts later, I finally rode away clean.
Honestly, I was in shock when I landed it. At that point I was so drained I almost wasn’t expecting it anymore.
This was exactly why I set out to make this project in the first place.
This one meant a lot.
Thank you, snowboarding.
