Ballistic Helmets?
Looking for help. This may be a regional thing or not, not really sure. I just took over logistics/equipment for a smaller department 75 sworn. We currently have ballistic helmets in our cruisers with our long rifles. IIIA and somewhat adjustable. I am proposing either buying each officer a new helmet, 50+k or doing away with them altogether. I’m of the opinion that the won’t properly fit 50% of our officers, big gorilla types or smaller statured types. Even if the do, we would only deploy them for a call involving weapons and then the IIIA would help with a rifle round. Lastly they are too damn heavy for a minimally trained officer to use with any effectiveness. I’ll fully outfit the guys assigned to the regional swat team but I think it’s a waste for the rank and file officer. Full disclosure, Greater Boston area, 35 years on, combat vet, who’s been a range master since 2008 and was on a regional swat team. Am I way off base here?
