What's the dumbest amount of effort you've put into a nonrev trip that ended up not working out?

I need to hear I'm not alone. Last month I spent like 2 hours the night before mapping out three different routing options to get to Lisbon, had backups for my backups, woke up at 4am to check loads one more time, drove to the airport feeling good about it, and got bumped on all three. Ended up eating airport Chick-fil-A and driving home in defeat.

I know we all have one of these. What's yours?

What's your commute-to-base strategy that actually works?

3 years commuting and I still feel like I'm rolling the dice every time. I've got my usual flights I try for, I check loads the night before and again at 4am, and I keep a backup or two in my head. But at least once a month something blows up and I'm scrambling.

I know some people have it dialed.. specific flights they swear by, crash pad setups, rules for when to just buy a ticket vs. risk it. What's your system? Especially curious about people commuting to smaller bases where there aren't 15 flights a day to choose from.

Commuters.. what's your morning routine when you're trying to get to base?

Like the actual step by step. What time do you wake up, what do you check first, how do you decide between flights, do you have a cutoff time where you just drive instead? How many backup flights do you keep in your head?

I commute and I feel like I've gotten my process down but every now and then I still get completely screwed and I wonder if other people have figured out something I haven't. Especially people commuting to bases with limited flight options.
