How are you supposed to walk a puppy you just got for introductions? Also looking for intro advice please.

So I already screwed up and introduced my 9wk lab mix I got a week ago to my 10yo Mal via pen separation in a guest room a few days ago. My Mal seems pretty indifferent of the puppy when I invite him to the guest room, just kind of lays down and chills without giving the pup much looks. So I guess it's going okay? Really want them to at least be friendly roommates than just yeah you exist okay though.

I had done neutral leashed meets for older dogs in the past before when mixing adult dogs into the household, but didn't know how important it was for a puppy too. This is my first puppy and I wasn't told much when I adopted the puppy other than don't let him touch the ground at places or visit a bunch of dogs until he's done with all his vaccines.

Anyway, from what I read I should let the pen stuff play out for a week or two before attempting distant leashed interaction in a neutural space. Correct me if I'm wrong please. But that also got me thinking...

How the heck are you supposed to walk an untrained puppy for a neutral greeting in the first place? Especially if they're not supposed to be in random places until fully vaccinated.

Like it's not leash trained? Are you supposed to just hide the puppy away in your house until he can at least poorly walk on a leash and is vaccinated?

Any help is much appreciated, especially in the "get the dogs friendly" department, cause the lack of enthusiasm I see from my mal is giving me some serious puppy blues :(.
