First fly advice

Starting my fly tying journey. Have my vise and tools. I fish nymphs a majority of the time. Will throw drys and hoppers if I see rises. Never really throw streamers. Most target trout.

Looking for recommendations on a first fly to tie. With that, I am looking for the materials I will need to tie that fly.

Thanks in advance!

Eastern US Fall Trip Recommendations?

Wife and I want to go on a “baby moon” this fall. I’ve been given the green light to take a couple morning to go fishing.

Here are the criteria I have to follow:

-Eastern half of the US
-Good fall foliage
-City or town near by (small town is fine as long as there are things to do)
-Good fishing with access (kind of feeling small stream, but don’t let that limit)

Thanks for any help!

Bringing the rod was ambitious… nice day though!

I’m glad I can appreciate a nice day on the water. Good temps, ok flows, almost no real bug activity though. Had a fish refuse my foam fly, had another hit a nymph, but that was it. Better luck next time!

Two Questions

Bought this lot of materials before I even knew what type of flies I would want to tie. Most all of my fishing these days is targeted at trout and bass. So, two questions.

1.) If I wanted to tie traditional trout patterns, do I have enough materials here to get started, or would you add other materials? (Mostly nymph focused)

2.) At $70, was this a worthwhile pick up?

Finally got a vise!

Don’t know much about it other than that it’s a Renzetti. Got it for $125.

Please share the best resources for learning how to tie!

Cool temps and big hatches!

Finally had a couple cool days and rain in my area. Got to the creek and saw a major hatch. I still can’t identify bugs that well, but I knew they were mayflies and had a greenish tint. Threw on a BWO and had a heck of a day!

Lost my net today, replacement recommendations requested!

It was a White River net from Cabelas. Got the job done, would like to upgrade, but not break the bank completely, unless it’s an absolute buy once cry one ordeal.

Bluelining has really changed my perspective on what a “nice catch” is!

Two prizes for a tough, but beautiful day!

Hooked 7, but only landed 2. Tons of risers, but couldn’t figure out what they were biting on. Nymphs saved the day again.

I owe today to Reddit!

When I first decided to get back into fly fishing, chasing native brook trout on small mountain streams was exactly what I had in mind. After months of soaking up advice and discussions on the subreddits here, I finally put it all together today and had an absolute blast.

I landed my first fish on a dry fly and my first brook trout! I brought nearly 15 to hand. They were small, but absolutely ferocious and beautiful to boot.

Between the rod recommendations (a 7' 3wt), the wet-wading advice, and all the other tips and tricks for this style of fishing, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone. This community played a huge part in making today such a memorable one.

A good day finally!

Slow start to the day, but picked up around noon. Some smaller to mid sized trout and then the bigger fella came out. He spit the hook, so I switched flies, casted again, and rehooked him right away. Great fight, great fish. Awesome day for some wild browns!
