Now that MMFF 2026 has to compete with Dune: Part Three and Doomsday, what kind of MMFF entry do you want to see?
Here's my take:
A romance with a genuinely fresh concept (e.g. Past Lives, The Lunchbox)
I want a romance that actually makes you feel something. Something intimate, sincere, and memorable, with a unique concept.
A psychological horror (e.g. Hereditary, The Shining)
Less jump scares, more suspense and atmosphere. I'd love something that's more performance-driven, where the horror comes from the acting as much as the story.
A Golden Age-style musical (e.g. The Sound of Music, Singin' in the Rain)
A big, colorful musical with great original songs, choreography, and classic Golden Age charm.
A family drama (e.g. Sentimental Value)
Just a really well-written, emotional story about family. No need for over-the-top drama if the writing is strong. (Walang may sakit na character, or may mamamatay.)
An arthouse film (e.g. Anatomy of a Fall)
Something bold and different that still has enough appeal for a wider audience.
A dark satire / black comedy (e.g. The Menu, Triangle of Sadness)
I think there's so much in our society that could be turned into a smart, funny, and biting satire. The Vice–Vic tandem could pull this off, in my opinion.
A mystery thriller (e.g. Prisoners)
A well-written mystery could be a huge crowd-pleaser if it's done right.
A historical epic (dir. Zig Dulay)
I'd love to see a big-budget Filipino period film with amazing production design, costumes, and cinematography.
