FINALLY HAD A GOOD DAY!!

Finally had a great day with the trout. I landed 4 and lost 3, including my biggest fish ever on the fly. Just rainbows today but hoping if I keep at it I’ll find some wild browns in this river. Got one on the mop fly today, but then it fell apart so I switched up since I only had one. Ended up throwing a TINY midge, which was basically just a bare hook with some black thread wrapped around it, and 6” above a pink fuzz egg. No indicator or dry fly, just let it sink and drift in the current. Got 3 more, all on the midge, with the pink egg acting as an attractor. I almost went home when it started raining hard as soon as I got there, but I figured the water was still clear so it should still be good and I’m glad I stayed. Thank you all for your help 🙏.

Finally got some trout

Many of you have helped me out a ton on my last couple posts. Thank you all. Today I finally caught some trout. I got 3. 2 on a grub fly because I found a big grub under a rock (Id please idk what it’s called and I would love to buy more, and 1 on a tiny midge that a nice old man gave me under a pink egg. Unfortunately, my hook setting and fish fighting skills still suck, so I lost another 9 trout, but I’m counting today as a win. Landed 3, know I had the right bait because I got so many bites. Tomorrow I’m going to try again and hopefully have a better land ratio. But I’m so happy I caught some today!

IMPROVEMENT! (And why I’m not quite there yet.)

Many of you guys saw and helped me out tremendously on my last post and I cannot thank you all enough. Today I went fly fishing at the same spot again and it was a massive step in the right direction. I made huge improvements to my casting and mending. I also was able to evaluate the stream and figure out what the trout would want. I flipped some rocks because I didn’t see any flies on the surface and I found some scorpion looking larvae. I decided to tie on this fly and a squirmy worm on an indicator rig, and I was able to catch 2 little smallmouth, but more importantly, I got 5 trout bites, including one from a nice wild brown. At least I know I’m doing something right. I hooked into 2 of them but landed none, and now I will get into my new unexpected problem. I have no idea how or when to set the hook on trout, and I also don’t know how to properly fight them on fly, hence losing all my fish today. If anyone has any advice for that I would really appreciate it, but I feel like today was a huge step in the right direction and I am so close to catching lots of trout I can taste it. I am going to try again tomorrow morning and Id love to know what I probably did wrong bringing the fish in or setting the hook so I can hopefully hook and land them tomorrow. Thank you so much everyone!

What happened to jarren Duran?

Does anyone have any theories as to his rapid decline since 2024? He went from a guy I thought could be a future mvp, to a solid above average player last year but a far cry from 2024, (I used to say it was a sophomore slump), to now maybe being the worst hitter in all of MLB. What happened? How does one decline that fast? He’s only 29 so I’m really at a loss.

This cute guy

Came right up to me while I was fishing. Looked at me for a bit and then moved away.

Heard this howling in [New Jersey]. Fox, pet dog, or coyote?? Couldn’t get any visuals on it and it sounded far away.

Heard it while fishing around sunset. Went on for about 20 minutes before stopping. At one point a dog started barking at the noise in the distance and it kept howling over the bark. This is in a suburban area but with lots of open land, taken in a very large park much of which is trailess, open woods. Wondering what it is.

Really need some help

Fishing a very difficult river in northern nj recently. It’s very shallow and I’ve had a very hard time catching fish since I’m new. It has strong ish current and crystal clear water. Very few holes deeper than 3 feet. Has wild and stocked trout. A lot of people do pretty well there but I am having a very hard time. Been there five times with 3 total fish over about 20 hours and been skunked 3 times. Any advice on what flies I should try, what rigs, indicator or no indicator, and how to do a more natural drift? Again, very new, just looking for some advice.

Natives on the fly!

First time ever! Thanks everyone for the help on my last post I was able to get a fish on a dry fly. 8 total. Most beautiful spot I’ve ever been to up in the mountains.

First time spotting a green Herron in years of fishing and birdwatching!

Super stoked to see this bird, these are the best pics I could get at the spot it was sitting. Spotted in New Jersey.

New fly fisherman! Need help

So I just got into fly fishing since my grandfather left me his old gear from years ago. I’ve been conventional fishing for years but this is a new challenge for me. Been hitting a river by my house which has stocked and wild trout. I have caught a few so far on nymphs. Today on my way out I found this pool and there were trout breaching EVERYWHERE. About one every 3 seconds. I tried every dry fly I own and the ones that matched the hatch I fished for probably 30 minutes but I could not get a bite. I would upload the video of them jumping but it won’t let me. I tried all different retrieves as well. I was matching the flies I saw flying all around me but when looking at the water it looked like the trout were surfacing on nothing. I am really trying to learn as much as I can so I figured I’d post since I’d like to get em next time. So what were they eating? What did I do wrong / what could i have done differently? I have found this community very welcoming and I am excited to hear what you guys have to say. Thanks!
