How to survive as a Cadet on a £850/ month?

UK Cadet here going to Warsash in Southampton. I was betting on my parents letting me live with them but its looking like that might not happen, so were gonna have to figure this out by ourselves.

Anyway, my questions...

How did you survive on this money? Did you take a job? Does the Uni offer cheap accommodations? Do you even have enough time to work a job?

It just seems like a really small amount to survive on.

P.S I have like 2k saved up.

Thanks.

I'm just about to enter my cadetship and I'm hearing this isn't a good job to get into?

5,000 euro mid to 10,000 euro senior ranks is pretty good no? Plus no tax, after 3 months of work you're taking home 15-30k, that's insane compared to regular land jobs.

Marine Engineering - Foundation Degree or HND?

I've been offered either one, but the thing is, foundation degree looks quite tough mathematically speaking... to be honest I just want this job for lifestyle security and money, I'm not necessarily big on theory.

Also I'm already 31 years old and don't want to mess around with anything I don't absolutely have to. And whilst yes I enjoy maths and science I dont want some difficult engineering/maths proofs blindsiding me.

Is there any advantage to taking the foundation degree? should I do a HND as there's less chance of dropping out?

Possible to switch from foundation degree to HND later on?

P.S Im UK

Teekay / TORM ok at training English cadets?

I heard theyre mostly manned by east Asian nationals, has anyone done their cadetship with them, language barriers? do the crew have a willingness to teach?

What vessels does Trinity House offer cadets experience on?

I heard they offer varied experience. I'm currently talking to SSTG and thinking of signing up with TORM. But honestly my main goal is LNG- does trinity house offer that? Also I heard trinity has better training and takes care of cadets etc.

Help me choose a sponsor company

Hey I need some help deciding on sponsor companies.

I'm a soon to be UK merchant navy engineer cadet (Warsash).

My goal is to work on LPG/LNG carriers, VLCCs, or chemical tankers. My main priorities are securing a job post-cadetship and working alongside a high-ish proportion of English-speaking crew (so I can learn...)

From Clyde Marine:
- Chevron Manning Services
- "K" Line LNG Shipping (UK) Ltd
- Northern Marine Manning Services / Stena
- Union Maritime Ltd.
- Lomar Shipping / Norbulk Shipping

From SSTG:
- TORM Shipping
- Teekay Tankers
- Tarmac Marine Ltd (not LPG but high chance of getting hired)

Which ones should I pick?

I saw on one company that the funding rules for applicants who already hold a same level or higher qualification are different:

"Under government funding rules the cost of undertaking a higher education course or degree programme can be considerably more for candidates undertaking a second qualification at the same, or lower level, to a previous qualification already held. We need to identify the actual cost of the sponsorship you may be offered in advance and are unlikely to be able to cover any tuition fees at the full economic rate."

Will this be a problem for me?

I’m currently deciding between a Deck or Engineering cadetship and have been reviewing industry salary data to help inform my choice. I noticed a significant pay spike for 2nd Engineers on VLCCs. Is there a specific reason for that premium?

I’m weighing the strong mid-career earnings of Engineers against the high salary potential for Senior Deck Officers in the yachting sector. However, as someone who is a bit autistic and awkward, I’m concerned about the social demands of yachting; how much client interaction is typically expected at the senior level? Finally, is it true that Engineers generally have more versatile shoreside exit opportunities?

Thanks.
