The other spygate

Only tangential Leeds, but Southampton getting kicked out of the play-offs beggars belief.

You can’t just institute a new law,  set no sanctions for breaking it and then go absolutely draconian at the first breach.

It’s like putting up a “don’t step on the grass”-sign and when someone steps on the grass they go “well we’re gonna have to cut your leg off then”.

It’s not violence or fraud or match fixing, it’s just a bloke with an iPhone!

It is funny though. And also hilarious if “23 in Championship xG-table” Hull end up promoted.

Profit and Sustainability vs Squad Cost Ratio

PSR changes next season to SCR. But this season it’s still PSR, so we need to be 3-year PSR-compliant on 30. June. That could still matter for our summer transfers if we have to sell in June to make the PSR-limit.

Under PSR, everything has been about not losing too much money across a rolling 3-year period, so that’s 2024-2026.

From next season how much you lose won’t matter much anymore. And more importantly: What’s happened before the current season won’t matter much either.

Our SCR-limit for 26/27 will be next year's
Matchday revenue (tickets, season tickets, hospitality, pie-sales, pints and so on)
+Broadcast revenue (all that Premier League-money)
+Commercial revenue (sponsorship deals, kit sales, LUTV-subscriptions, the webshop…)
+Profit on player sales (transfer fee minus remaining book value)
=Football Income
And then you can spend max 85 % of that on
Player amortization (transfer fee divided by the number of years on the contract)
+Wages to first team players and coaches
+Agent fees and bonuses
=Squad cost

(Unless you’re in Europe, then you can only spend 70 %. But your Football Income will obviously be higher as well.)

Any cost not on that list will not count. Interest on loans don’t count. Youth team cost don't count. Legal fees don’t count (unless specifically related to transfers). Paraag Marathe’s wages, or the marketing team’s or the staff at the supporters-shop or the tea-lady, or whatever we pay the West Yorkshire Police these days. None of that counts as squad cost. If they sell a £10 burger in the ground on matchday, the full ten pounds will count as football income and the 12 pence they paid for the meat and buns will not be deducted.

Significantly: None of the stadium re-development cost will count either.

And it also means there's no point selling your ground or your women's team to yourself anymore as that would not be Football Income.

But until that kicks in on 1. July, we must get past the final PSR-report and stay within that 3-year rolling limit.

The thing to watch out for is player sales in June. If we have to sell players in June, that would be bad news. It means we’re behind on PSR and need 25/26 profit to make up the balance. Any June sales will be money already spent. July or August sales, that’s future money. (There is a caveat in that your baseline 26/27 budget allowance for Football Income will be partly justified by preveious season numbers).

So with £3mill extra for every step up the table, if we end up finishing 17 and not 14 we might have to sell Joel Piroe in June to make up the £9mill dropped or risk PSR-breach.

But if we finish 14 instead of 17, we could sell him in July and it would count towards 26/27 Football Income.

(Just an example obviously, I don't know the actual numbers).

The contracts

Out of contract: Darlow, Meslier, Cairns, Byram

One year left: Struijk, Ampadu, Gruev, Aaronson, Piroe, Nmecha, Wöber, Gelhardt

Two years left: Rodon, Bogle, Tanaka, Gnonto, Harrison, Calvert-Lewin, Schmidt, Joseph, Ramazani

Three years left: Perri, Gudmundsson, Bornauw, Justin, Stach, Longstaff, James, Okafor

Four years left: Bijol

Pretty favorable overall. For Ampadu, Leeds supposedly have an option to extend by one more year, but are looking to tie him down long term. He’d be my player of the season, and one of the youngest (after Gnonto, Joseph, Ramazani and Aaronson).

From a recent Farke presser it sounded like they’ll want to offer Darlow another year.

Main discussions must be around Struijk, Aaronson, Gruev and Nmecha, where you either extend or sell in the summer.

Piroe, Wöber and Gelhardt you’d expect sold for whatever we can get.

Other players could obviously be sold, but not for contract-reasons.
