Black tie awards night
I’ve been invited to an awards night for work as we’ve been nominated for it. The invitation states the dress code simply as black tie. Now I thought that was self explanatory and literally meant black suit and bow tie. I went suit shopping with my mum and her friend said that black tie doesn’t necessarily mean you need to wear black. Tried some things on and ended up trying in a navy suit as they didn’t end up having the black version in the right size, so it was just to see if it fit. Ended up buying the navy blue suit, due to the person working there and a few others saying the blue suits me more (like example photo) with white shirt (no waistcoat or anything) normal maroon tie, and I was going to get some sort of brown oxfords. Talking to someone else and they said the opposite and that black tie does usually mean black tuxedo and black bow tie. Should I return the dark navy suit?
