This is the first time (and hopefully the last time) I've taught dual-enrollment, so I'm curious - If you teach dual-enrollment, do your students come to the college campus or do you go to the high school? The reason I'm curious is because I have to go to the high school. Just my observation, but it seems like because it's at the high school, the students seem to like to act out more and are less serious than the students that attend class on campus. There is not that much of an age difference, so I don't think that is the issue -

Plus because they are taught at the high school, these students get to take all kinds of time off from classes and it really makes a mess of the class schedule - One week they had two "eLearning days" - so no classes, another day lost for "homecoming" activities, another two days missed because of "Fall Break" (no it's not the week of Thanksgiving, it's in addition to that) and they have missed several other days for meetings, senior in-school photographs etc

Has anyone else had to deal with all this? It's like they have missed 1/3 of their scheduled classes and yet they are supposed to get college credit for this class?

Todays rant! Why do I give them a syllabus? Why do I post examples of documents in Canvas? Why do I go over the assignment and how to complete it in class?

Today one of my students decides to turn in a link for an assignment - I explained to them on the first day I will not accept links nor will I download files - They do it anyway.

I have examples of how their assignments are supposed to be formatted - they turn in what they feel like.

Today, in class, I had a student pull out his phone and call the art museum because he forgot to get information he needed for an assignment - class was not over yet,

These are my dual-enrollment kiddies who are supposed to be so advanced they can take college classes and earn credits while they are in high school - Biggest bunch of crap ever. Told my chair, I don't want these classes next semester, the college can't pay me enough.

Okay, so I teach Art Appreciation - and we have started teaching dual enrollment students. Part of their "homework" is to go to a local art museum, pick out a piece of art and write a report. I am not allowed to take them off their high school campus (and to be honest I don't know if I would want to if I could) One thing I have them do is submit a selfie standing next to the piece of art along with the report (they are supposed to insert the photo into the report) so I know they actually went to the museum.

One student sends me her report - the photo of the picture is sideways and she's standing there with her tongue sticking out like this is some kind of joke to her - her report was less than half the length it was supposed to be as well.

These dual enrollment students are so difficult to deal with; they act like everything is some kind of joke - they get to take these courses for college credits for free and they don't seem to understand that the grades they get now will follow them for a long time.

Can someone give me some pointers on dealing with them?

Okay, so in class a couple of days ago, I had a student ask me - "Do we have exams in this class?" Really? Now, here's the kicker - I give them a printed copy of the syllabus AND there is a 10 point assignment - it's called Syllabus Acknowledgement - I literally tell them to read the syllabus and then go into Canvas and complete the assignment by typing a statement like "I have read and understand the syllabus" - So, I asked the student if she completed the assignment - Of course she did; I replied "Well, apparently not or you wouldn't have asked the question - Right?" Gotta love them, they just keep getting better and better....

I am an adjunct at a community college. I started working there four semesters ago. I teach art apprec. - I have a Masters with the required amount of hours needed in the area I teach and a BFA. I am currently working on a second Masters in a different subject area (the department head told me that was "stupid). I didn't join academia until later than most; I had a successful military career, went back to school and decided to try my hand at teaching; I was an instructor in the military and totally enjoyed what I did.

The problem I'm having is with the department chair; he asked me to apply to work there; I was a student there when I decided to go back to school and when he found out I was working on my Masters told me he was looking for an adjunct so once I graduated to apply - I did and he hired me. However, ever since he hired me, he's tried to find other "gigs" to send me away from the main campus of the college - One was to go to a campus further away to teach once a week - there was already another person from the department there teaching the same class, but for whatever reason, he wanted me to go there instead. This semester it's dual enrollment classes - Two dual enrollment classes in addition to the one on campus class. Our main building was renovated; all of us were looking forward to getting back into our building - then with less than two weeks to the start of the semester, I was told I would not be moving with everyone else - I'm still in the crappy classroom away from everyone else except the theater department.

I kind of mentioned some of my concerns to the department admin person when I was at the campus making copies of my syllabus and of course, this is when I found out she will run to the chair and tell him everything; didn't think she was this way but....so, I'm sitting in my husband's doctors office and the department chair starts blowing up my phone with "if you don't want to teach I can find someone else" - He didn't stop until I told him where I was; I'm not on contract and I'm kind of pissed; I've never missed a day of work; last semester I went to teach two weeks after having my shoulder repaired. I'm at a loss how to handle this guy - I like teaching, I like working with the kids; I do the best I can; I try to help the young people as much as I can. I just don't know how to handle this guy.
