A book to add some texture to my hike across the north of Spain

I’m going to Spain this summer to walk the Camino de Santiago and I’m looking for a good book to take with me that will immerse me in the history of Spain (maybe Europe or even Christianity as a whole). I’m not religious at all but I do find the history of the church fascinating.

I love the podcast The Rest is History, especially the episodes on medieval European history, the stories they tell, the texture these stories add to the landscape and I’m looking for something to fill that same gap as I don’t expect to have much access to my phone on my trip. I’ve been loving The Count of Monte Cristo recently and would love something of a similar style.

In short: I’m looking for something to make me feel the past in the present as I walk across that beautiful part of the world. Your suggestions would be much appreciated, thanks in advance!
