Is it more important to do Torah Study or Learn Hebrew

Hi guys,

I’ve set aside an hour a day when I’m not working to be able to study Torah. But I daven in English, learn in English, can’t communicate with many Jews (and family) who only speak Hebrew, which got me thinking - with the devotion of time, is it better to pause the Torah study until I’m fluent in Hebrew and can learn and pray in the original text? Or more important to do Torah study and scrape together whatever other 15 mins here or there I may have for the Hebrew?

Tu B’Av Thought: Are We Stricter Than the Israelites?

As we know, Tu B’Av is when the unmarried women of Jerusalem would dress in all white and dance in the fields, and men would look, observe and choose a spouse.

If under the strict Halacha of today, of guarding the eyes, and shomer negiah, non-mixed dancing (I know the tradition doesn’t state men and women danced together, but still) and mechitzas, etc. - would such an event have taken place?

Is there evidence to suggest that the Israelites were as strict in the Jewish law as we are now? It seems hard to believe that a society like that would adhere to such rigid norms, particularly when festivities like Tu B’Av existed.

Studying on Shabbat

I’m pursuing a CFA, and am Bal Teshuva and just started keeping Shabbat BH. The CFA is an extraordinarily difficult exam and requires many hours of studying per day, or 300-400 hours per level. I want to study on Shabbat - obviously I can’t write or use electronic devices - according to strict orthodox interpretation is it legal to just read textbooks or reread your notes?

Thank you!

(I have a rabbi, will ask my rabbi, and wanted to ask here as well :) )

First Time CFA

Hello all,

I hope you’re well. I am a first year analyst right out of university about to start my job and embark on my CFA journey. I am completely new to this. I haven’t registered for a test (will probably register for L1 Feb 27), and haven’t bought any courses. I’d love to know if anyone has specific private courses they recommend - I know just signing up grants you access to textbooks etc., is this all you need or is it better to go through a third party study platform? Is studying an hour and a half every weeknight and several hours on weekends a reasonable expectation to be able to pass? Anything else in general I should know?

Thank you very much!

Halacha on Fighting with a Fellow Jew

In the case of a Jew being disrespected by another Jew (let’s say, from a joke, side comment, getting testy, that sort of thing), in the Torah-based reaction to ignore it for the sake of Ahavat Yisrael, endure it silently, etc. or to respond in kind?

I came across a line I find interesting: “The Rema cites the Tur’s explanation of the Mishnah at the beginning of Shulchan Aruch: “Lo yeivosh mipnei hamal’igim” (one should not be bashful in front of scoffers)”

But there are also countless, countless verses “I will not offer a retort” or in the amidah’s ending “my soul be like dust to all”, etc etc etc.

There are plenty of perspectives that offer mixed messaging. So in a scenario where you are disrespected by another Jew and they persist on that path with harbored poor intentions, what is the Torah response?
