Transitioning from Corporate Governance / SEBI Compliance (Semi-qualified Company Secretary) into ESG — looking for advice from people who've made a similar move

Hi,

I'm looking for some honest guidance from people who've transitioned into ESG & Sustainability from a non-environmental background.

My background/ current qualifications are:

  • 5 years in corporate secretarial compliance - SEBI LODR, board-level governance, MCA filings, secretarial audits, SEBI compliance for listed companies
  • Currently completing a Certificate in Business Management programme at a reputed business school in India
  • Planning in learning ESG frameworks - BRSR, GRI, and exploring certifications

What I'm trying to figure out:

  1. Is a governance/ compliance background genuinely valued in ESG, or do employers prefer environmental science or finance backgrounds?
  2. Which certifications actually made a difference when you were starting out - GRI, CFA ESG, GARP SCR, or something else?
  3. Are there specific roles within ESG that are better entry points for someone with my background?
  4. Any honest advice on what the early days of an ESG career actually look like - the good and the not-so-good?

Thanks in advance - really appreciate any insights!
