My wife left a permanent mark on my hand years ago, and now my second child won’t stop asking about it
This happened years ago, but the mark is still there, and somehow it has become a family story that keeps getting passed around.
Back when my wife and I were newly married, she was one of the most absent-minded people I had ever met. She would forget where she left her phone, her keys, or even a cup of coffee she had just made five minutes earlier.
One evening, we were cooking dinner together. I was helping her move a hot baking tray from the oven when she suddenly got distracted by something on the counter. Without thinking, she shifted her grip and the edge of the tray pressed against my left hand.
It wasn't serious enough for a hospital visit, but it left a pretty nasty burn. After it healed, a small scar remained. It's not huge, but it's noticeable enough that people sometimes ask about it.
At the time, I was annoyed. She felt terrible and apologized for weeks. Looking back now, it's actually one of those memories we laugh about more than anything.
Fast forward to today, and my second child recently noticed the scar for the first time.
"Dad, what happened to your hand?"
Before I could answer, my wife immediately said, "That's the mark I gave him so he'd never forget me."
Now my kid tells everyone that Mom "branded" Dad like some kind of farm animal.
The funniest part is that after all these years, the scar doesn't remind me of the accident. It reminds me of that stage of our lives when everything was messy, chaotic, and new.
Anyone else have a scar with a story behind it that turned into a family joke?
