Consumer rights question: signing repair report before product assessment (Victoria)

Hi everyone,

I’m based in Victoria and would appreciate some general guidance on consumer rights regarding a product assessment process.

I purchased a Louis Vuitton canvas handbag from an authorised boutique in Melbourne. After normal use and storage, the bag developed a strong persistent chemical/acid-like odour that makes it unusable. Other items stored in the same conditions do not have this issue.

I returned it to the store, and they have suggested it may be related to usage or storage conditions. However, I have been advised that the item will be sent overseas for further assessment by the brand’s repair centre.

Before proceeding, I’m being asked to sign a repair report at the store. I’m unclear about what legal effect this document may have in terms of liability or acceptance of fault.

My questions are:

  • In Victoria, what rights does a consumer generally have in a situation where a product may have a defect vs. alleged misuse?
  • Is it normal for retailers to initially attribute issues to customer use before a manufacturer assessment?
  • Does signing a repair/assessment form usually affect consumer rights or ability to dispute the outcome later?

I’m not looking to escalate anything yet, just trying to understand the process and my rights before signing any documents.

Thanks in advance for any guidance.
