I saw a Honda Stepwgn with Armenian plates in Bishkek. How does this work?

I know Japanese cars are popular in Central Asia, but I was surprised to see a Japanese minivan registered in Armenia being used in Kyrgyzstan.

It made me curious about how Japanese domestic market vehicles end up in places like Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Georgia and other former Soviet countries.

Is this still a common import route today?

I’m not looking to import one right now, I’m mainly interested in how the whole process works.
