I am trying to recall a book I read at a library book club in the 1990s. In it, a woman raised Southern/rural/poor marries a man whose family has more money and a different background. She makes faux pas after faux pas while visiting the family and their relationship is threatened. They have a sexy reunion in a barn (closed door romance)? The husband, who is white, has a best friend who is Black and in the military and there was disagreement over whether he should be the godfather for their children.

This book sticks in my mind because of the masterful way the book discussion leader convinced our book group that the naive female main character was more often in the right than the more worldly in-laws.
