Best local EX280 / DO280 practice environment on M1 MacBook?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently studying Kubernetes locally on my 16GB M1 MacBook using UTM with 3 Linux VMs.

The setup works reasonably well for Kubernetes practice, but now I want to start preparing for the Red Hat EX280 / DO280 exam and I’m not sure what kind of OpenShift environment would work best on Apple Silicon Macs with limited memory.

I’m actually just a backend developer, not an infrastructure engineer. In my current job I use Ansible quite often, but I’ve become very interested in OpenShift recently and honestly just want to learn it deeply because I feel like it could become useful for me someday.

I tried searching for good Apple Silicon/M1 learning setups for OpenShift, but I couldn’t really find clear answers or realistic home-lab examples, so I decided to ask here directly.

Since I’m studying personally, I cannot afford Red Hat’s paid training or subscription services.

I’d like to ask:

  • What environment are you using for EX280 practice on Apple Silicon Macs?
  • Is OpenShift Local (CRC) usable on a 16GB M1 Mac nowadays?
  • Would you recommend continuing with UTM VMs + OpenShift Local?
  • Are there any good free/community alternatives for practicing OpenShift administration?
  • Which setup feels closest to the actual EX280 exam environment?

Right now my goal is mostly:

  • oc CLI practice
  • troubleshooting
  • deployments/routes/storage/configmaps/secrets
  • general OpenShift admin tasks

Any advice or study setup recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
