Hello everyone. We are in the process of bonding two gerbils and one of them managed to get to the other side overnight. I found them this morning and one of them (a white one) had blood stains on it. They were, to my surprise, sleeping together, with the white one cuddling over the other one. I made a permanent split out of fear of more agression and I am unsure whether I should reinforce the mesh divider and put it in again. We were 3 weeks into the bonding process and they are, to my surprise, trying to reach each other through the solid plexiglass divider I just put in.
Should we keep trying to bond them or is this is it for them?
Some more information:
- Our white gerbil bit the other and the blood stains match the pattern of the cuddling position I found them in.
- Both of them look to be ok physically, no serious injury was sustained. I picked up our white gerbil and it chattered its teeth at me but it was truly nervous. I do not know the other gerbil well enough to pick it up to check it out without risking an injury, but it's behavior looks normal.
- Both of them are male.
- White's brother passed away a month ago and we found the other gerbil from an animal rescue organization.
Thank you a lot!
